Gonga
A traditional Cypriot card game based on Gin / Rummy
About Gonga
Gonga is a card game played for points over multiple rounds (hands).
Be the last player left in the game!
Starting with 10 cards each, take turns to draw a card, put down any sets or patches, then discard one of your cards.
When a player discards their last card, the others add the value of the cards they're holding to their score.
Score the table target or more and you're out of the game.
Useful terms
Sets: 3 or more cards of the same rank and different suits, or same suit and consecutive rank. Aces may be high or low, but not both.
Patch: a card you can add to a set that has already been put down keeping the set valid.
Jokers: may represent any card. Players can swap a joker in a set that's been put down for the card it represents.
Table target: 101 for 2 players, 151 for 3 or 4 players. Accumulate this many points and you're out.
About the developer
My name is John Papanastasiou. I'm a Cypriot computer programmer born in London to loving parents from two villages near Larnaca. My father taught me to play Gonga when I was 8 years old and I have fond memories of playing it ever since.
I love playing Gonga. The thrill of winning is special but nothing beats catching everyone out by putting all your cards down in one turn.
I built this app so I could play Gonga on my phone during my daily commute. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I do.
